Prospects Become First 12u Team From Indiana to Win In Cooperstown, Topping Jacksonville Beach (FL) Whitecaps, 8-6

12U Finished the 2008 season with a 19-game winning streak and 7 tournament wins

Since 1999 over 10,000 12 year-old baseball teams have made an annual pilgrimage to Cooperstown, NY to play in what many consider a right of passage for a young baseball player – week long tournaments comprised of teams from throughout the United States.  This year, a local Indiana team made history, becoming the first team from the state to win a tournament at the birthplace of baseball.

The 2008 12u Indiana Prospects played their way to a perfect 10-0 mark on the week, besting teams from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, New Jersey, New York, and eventually, an 8-6 championship win over the Jacksonville Beach, FL Waves. The win capped a very successful 2008 campaign, as the Prospects won 7 baseball tournaments on the year, and compiled a 51-11 record against 12u teams.

The Prospects relied on power hitting and outstanding pitching to capture the title.  In their very first game against the Canyon Coyotes (CA), Nathan Upchurch and Andrew Riley set the tone with back-to-back home runs in their first at bats, en route to 32 team home runs for the week.  Trevor Salmon and Chase Allen added home runs against the Coyotes as well, Allen on his way to a team best 9 roundtrippers for the week.  Brendan Burns, Khristian Reynolds and Andrew Riley each chipped in 4 home runs for the week, Burns with 2 Grand Slams, Reynolds with a game-winning 2-run shot in the quarterfinals and Riley with 2 in the Championship game.

On the hill, the Prospects were anchored by Allen and Reynolds, with Reynolds recording the win in both the Semifinal and Championship game. Despite hitting 32 home runs as a team, the Prospects only gave up 1 home run on the week.  Nathan Upchurch, Trevor Salmon, Garret Schlotter, Andrew Riley and Mac Lozer also made solid contributions from the mound.

9U Heads to Disney with a 45-6 record

The 9U Prospects wrapped up their regular season with a runner-up finish at the BPA South State Tournament.  Due to the rain, the kids had to play (6) games on Sunday including (5) in a row just to have a chance at the state title.  A very good Smithville team put the boys in the loser bracket with a 9-5 win.  However, the 9's reeled off three straight for a rematch with Smithville and proceeded to give them their first defeat with a 7-3 victory.  The title match was hard fought but the Prospects were on the short end of a gut-wrenching 5-4 loss.  When all was said and done, the youngsters played 11 hours of baseball on Sunday.  The enthusiam and energy put out by these kids was spectacular and they should be proud of their success.  Its now off to Disney to test their skills with the best teams in the country during the first week of August.  Good luck guys!!

Prospects Win Edgewood "Top Dog" Challenge

Prospects Win Second Tournament of 2008, Earn Edgewood “Top Dog” Challenge Championship

The Prospects advanced their record to 11-1 on the season, and 2-0 in tournament play with the 5-4 victory over the Smithville Scrappers

The tournament kicked off on Friday night with an 8:15 contest vs. the Center Grove Trojans.  Center Grove came out firing, scoring three runs in the first inning off 4 hits.  Starter Mac Lozer settled in, allowing just one more run in his last inning, the 3rd.  Nathan Upchurch came in for the save, preserving the 7-4 victory by striking out 8 Trojan batters in the last three innings, allowing only 2 hits and no runs.  Lozer and Chase Allen led the Prospects offense with their 2nd home runs of the season … Allen’s going over the 260’ sign on the center field fence.  Garret Schlotter and Andrew Riley each added doubles.

Game 2 on Saturday, pitted the Decatur Central Hawks vs. the Prospects.  The Hawks go off to an early lead, scoring 2 runs off of starter Trevor Salmon in the 1st on two base hits and a passed ball.  Salmon only allowed two other runs in three innings of work, and Brendan Burns earned the save, pitching the final two innings while allowing no runs and no hits.  At the plate, Lozer led the way again, going 2 for 3 including a double.  Matt Nash, Brennan Greer and Salmon were all 1 for 2.

In the Semi-Final matchup vs. Avon, the Prospects mounted a balanced attack … solid pitching as well as solid hitting.  Chase Allen got the starting nod, and only needed 37 pitches and 5 strikeouts in three innings work to hold Avon scoreless.  Allen handed the ball off to Brendan Burns, who recorded his 2nd save, 10-5.  Nathan Upchurch led the offensive charge, going 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs.  Burns was perfect from the plate as well, going 2 for 2 and scoring 2 runs, while Salmon turned in a solid 2 for 3 performance with  2 runs as well.

The Championship game was an exciting battle between the Prospects and the undefeated Smithville Scrappers.  The visiting Prospects took the first shot, scoring 2 runs off of singles by Schlotter, Lozer and Allen, followed by a deep Sac Fly by Salmon.  Starting Pitcher Chase Allen held the Scrappers in the first, retiring the first three batters in order.  Smithville held the Prospects in the second, despite lead off singles by Garringer and Upchurch.  With two men on an no outs, the Prospects were unable to plate a run.  In their half of the 2nd, however, Smithville scored three to take a 3-2 lead.  This was the beginning of a see-saw battle that would not end until the final play of the last inning.

Going into the top of the 6th, the game was tied 4-4.  Mac Lozer led off with a single.  After being caught in a rundown between 1st and 2nd, Lozer was able to advance to third on a Smithville overthrow that went out of play.  Chase Allen came through with a solid single to bring Lozer in for the go-ahead run.  With Nathan Upchurch on the hill in the bottom of the 6th, the Prospects were able to record the first out on only three pitches.  The next batter was walked, and a stole base and a passed ball later, the tieing run was at third.  The #7 hitter then drilled a shot deep down the right field line.  Right fielder Trevor Salmon chased it down and made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch, and followed it up with a “strike” to home plate.  Unfortunately for Smithville, the runner on third thought the ball was down, and left early for home.  After the appeal to third, the game was over, and the Prospects held onto the 5-4 win.

Upchurch recorded the win and along with Garringer led the team from the plate, going 2 for 2.  Lozer and Allen  also turned in solid performances, going 2 for 3 … with Allen plating the winning run (Lozer).

This was a quality win against a very quality opponent.  Nice Job Prospects!

On a roll...12U Makes It Three In A Row

Prospects Make It Three In A Row, Champions of Pony Express Start of Summer Slam Tournament

Knock off Indiana Bulls 8-4 in the finale!

The Prospects continued their winning ways, by going undefeated and capturing their 3rd straight tournament. The Prospects were a late entrant to the Pony Express Start of Summer Slam, only accepting the invitation 5 days prior due to a late scratch.

The Prospects kicked off pool play on Friday night vs. the McCutcheon Mavs. Matt Nash led off a 4-run first inning, and the Prospects never looked back, beating the Mavs 8-4. Nathan Upchurch threw a complete game winner for the Prospects, striking out 8 while walking just 1. Chase Allen, Brendan Burns and Upchurch led the offensive attack, each going 1 for 2 on the night. Burns added three RBIs, as did Brennan Greer.

Game 2 began Saturday morning vs. Victory Baseball out of Joliet, IL. Mac Lozer took the hill for the Prospects, throwing 3 innings of 1 hit baseball. Trevor Salmon pitched the 4th and final inning, as the Prospects prevailed 9-1 in a mercy-rule shortened contest. Garret Schlotter and Alex Garringer each went 1 for 1 at the plate, and Lozer, Upchurch, Salmon and Greer went 1 for 2 ... Greer and Salmon with 2 RBIs each.

Game 3 on Saturday afternoon pitted the Indiana Mustangs vs. the Prospects. This ended up as another mercy-rule shortened contest, as the Prospects plated 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th to win, 9-1. Chase Allen got the win, pitching 3 innings of 1-hit shutout baseball. Trevor Salmon came in again to close out the game, pitching the 4th, giving up 1 run. Garret Schlotter and Alex Garringer led the offense, going 2 for 3 and 2 for 2 respectively. Brendan Burns and Allen each went 1 for 1, while Andrew Riley and Nathan Upchurch went 1 for 2 ... Upchurch adding 2 RBIs with a 3rd inning double.

In the Semi-Final matchup vs. USAthletics, Nathan Upchurch again took the hill for the Prospects, throwing a complete-game 3-hitter. It was the second complete-game, 8 strikout outing for Upchurch on the weekend, giving the Prospects a 7-1 win. Matt Nash and Mac Lozer led the offense, each going 2 for 3 and scoring 2 runs each. Lozer carded 2 doubles! Riley, Salmon and Upchurch each went 1 for 2.

Chase Allen took the mound in the Championship vs. the Indiana Bulls, leading the team with a complete-game 8-4 win. Center Fielder Matt Nash came up big, with 5 catches in the outfield, as well as a lead-off double in the first, 2 runs scored and an RBI! Garret Schlotter and Mac Lozer each added 2 runs and 2 for 3 days at the plate. Brendan Burns had a solid performance, going 2 for 3 as well.

All in all, it was another outstanding weekend for this FIRST YEAR Prospects team. Keep it rolling, Prospects, as an Elite 24 World Series berth is on the line next weekend in Sterling Heights, MI!

9U BOUND FOR DISNEY WORLD AND ELITE 24 WORLD SERIES

The 9U Prospects continued raising the bar as they become the first team in Prospects organization history to qualify for the Elite 24 World Series in Disney World by finishing runner-up at the Super NIT in Sterling Heights, MI.  This is quite an honor as the Prospects are one of only 24 teams from across the country that are invited to this prestigous event put on by USSSA.

Pool play has been the staple all season and it wasn't any different this time around.  An easy 10-1 win against Detroit Baseball Acadmey (MI) was followed by a tough 7-4 win against the Parma Stars (OH).  The last pool play game was a hard fought 4-3 win against Michigan Sports Academy (MI).  However, that still wasn't enough as the team wasn't able to get the #1 seed for tournament play as the boys gave up one more run than the #1 seed, Beaver Valley.

Tournament play started out with a rematch against Michigan Sports Academy who upset the tournament favorite in extra innings, Detroit Motor City Hit Dogs.  This time around proved to be less of a battle as the Prospects came through with a 12-2 victory as the bats came alive and the win secured a trip to Disney.  The hits kept coming but Beaver Valley's bats were even hotter and they overcame with a 15-11 win in a slugfest and Super NIT championship.

9U Prevails

9U Win 3rd Title at Pony Express Start of Summer Slam

The Prospects 9U team continued there winning ways by going 5-0 over the weekend.  It wasn't easy though as a strong Kentucky Mudcat team provided quite a road block in pool play and tournament play.  However, the young Prospects came through with 3-2 and 9-8 victories.  The team prevailed in the championship game with a 3-2 win against a stingy Pony Express team. This makes it 3 titles this season for the youngsters to go along with the Bandits Blast and the Lincoln Park NIT tournament championships.

Prospects Beat Cincinnati Flames to Win the Bandit Yard Hoosier Early Bird Tourament

In their first games together as a team, the 2008 12u Prospects went 4-0 on the weekend to capture their first Tournament Championship.

>

On Saturday, the Prospects began against the Indiana Playmakers from Northwest Indiana.  Nathan Upchurch and Trevor Salmon combined for a no-hitter, and a 10-2 4-inning victory.  Matt Nash led the team at the plate going 2-2, Chase Allen went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, and Mac Lozer hit the first HR of the season in his second at bat as a Prospect.

Game 2 on Saturday pitted the Prospects against the 11u Indiana Bandits.  Garret Schlotter and Alex Garringer pitched the team to a 4-inning 10-1 victory.  Schlotter also led from the plate, going 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

In Semi-Final action on Sunday, the Prospects faced the Playmakers once again.  The Playmakers held the Prospects scoreless through 3 innings, and held a 2-0 lead.  The fourth inning, however, was all Prospects, as the team put together 7 hits and 10 runs to end the game 10-2 after 4 innings.  Mac Lozer threw all 4 innings for the win, allowing only 2 hits.

The Championship Game was a great opportunity for the young Prospect team, as the Cincinnati Flames were their opponent. The Flames are a top organization, and always put good teams on the field, so it was a chance for this team to test itself.

Matt Nash led off the game with a base hit up the middle. 2 stolen bases later, and an RBI by Mac Lozer gave the Prospects a 1-0 lead.  The bottom of the 1st was the coming out party for Chase Allen.  Good control and excellent velocity spelled victory for Chase this afternoon, striking out 7, and allowing only 2 hits and 1 run in 5 innings work.  Chase handed off a 10-1 lead to Upchurch and Salmon, who closed out the game and the 11-5 victory.

Alex Garringer and Nathan Upchurch led the Prospects at the plate, each going 3 for 4.  Garringer added 2 RBIs and Upchurch added 4.  Brennan Greer and Allen each added 2 hits as well.

Prospects Finish 6th At AAU National Championships, Orlando, FL

The 11U Prospects finished their 2006 campaign with a strong 6th place finish out of 33 teams at Nationals, being held at the Wide World of Sports at Disney World.
The Prospects were 5-1 after 2 rounds of Pool Play, and entered the final field of 8 as the #2 overall seed. Unfortunately, the Prospects were not able to wake up the bats in their contest with the Tampa Cobras, and fell short, 5-2. The five runs given up to the Cobras, were the most runs the Prospects gave up in any single game throughout the tournament.

Ryan Spaulding was named to the All-Tournament team, as each team was only allowed one selection. Ryan came through with clutch pitching and some outstanding defensive plays to lead the Prospects. Suffice it to say, however, that the Prospects had several deserving players, including catcher Alex Etherington who gunned down 11 base runners attempting to steal.

In only their 1st year together, the 11U Prospects compiled a 38-12 record,3 tournament victories, a 3rd place finish as well as the 6th place finish at Nationals.

11U Prospects Win USSSA NIT Memorial Weekend Tournament, St. Louis, MO

2006 USSSA NIT Memorial Weekend Champions, St. Louis, MO

Playing 9 games in three days with temperatures over 90 degrees seemed tough enough.  The 11U Prospects, however, had to play 4 STRAIGHT games to capture the championship on Memorial Day.

The Prospects went 2-1 during pool play, losing their 3rd game of the day on Saturday to the Sparks Travelers from Orland Park, IL.  As the #3 seed on Sunday, the Prospects run-ruled both the Bridgeton Tornados and the Troy Thunder, to advance to the Winner's Bracket Semi-Final vs. the Sparks Travelers on Memorial Day.  The Prospects lost that game, blowing a 2 run lead in the bottom of the 6th to lose 7-6.

Dropping down to the Losers Bracket, the Prospects blanked the Troy Thunder, 12-0, setting up a rematch for the championship with the Sparks Travelers.  In the rematch, the Prospects prevailed 8-4.  Being a double-elimination tournament, however, the teams stayed on the field for what would be the Prospects 4th straight game.
In Prospects fashion, the boys rallied around each other to post a lopsided 19-7 victory to take home the Championship.
